Match the torque range to your application. Car lug nuts need 80-140 ft-lbs (1/2" drive), while bicycles require 2-25 ft-lbs (1/4" drive). Click-type wrenches like EPAuto's 10-150 Nm model cover automotive maintenance, but won't work for precision electronics requiring 10-70 in-lbs models. Larger 1/2" drives handle more torque but lack precision for delicate fasteners.
Look for ±3-4% accuracy at minimum—better wrenches achieve ±2%. Click-type wrenches lose calibration with drops or over-torquing; expect recalibration every 5,000 cycles or annually. Beam-type wrenches never lose calibration but require direct line-of-sight reading. Digital wrenches offer 0.1 ft-lb precision but need battery replacements.
Click wrenches ($30-150) provide tactile/audible feedback and don't require watching a gauge. Beam wrenches ($20-60) are foolproof and durable but slower to use. Digital models ($80-300) store settings and track peak torque but cost more and can fail electronically. Avoid preset wrenches unless you torque one spec repeatedly.
Chrome vanadium or chrome molybdenum steel resists wear better than basic chrome plating. Longer handles (18-24") provide leverage for high-torque work but won't fit tight spaces where 10-12" wrenches excel. Knurled grips prevent slipping on oily fasteners. Check for cushioned handles on models you'll use for extended periods.
